Colon Hydrotherapy

Everybody eats! Eating food is the innate function all human beings must partake for survival. Most of us assume the body will automatically breakdown what we feed it to have sufficient energy to effortlessly maintain our lives. Yet it is through the amazing processes of digestion, assimilation and elimination that the human body converts food to the usable chemical resources we need to sustain life. The end result of this amazing “food to energy” chemical conversion process is the production of waste byproducts that must be eliminated to sustain systemic biochemical homeostasis or balance between the potentially useful and potentially harmful resources. If waste is not removed an organism will die.

The human body is designed with four basic waste elimination channels: the Lungs, the Skin, the Kidneys, and the Bowel. The Bowel is also known as the Colon or Large Intestines. This important organ not only eliminates solid waste but also is the location where certain vitamins are synthesized and water-soluble nutrients are absorbed. Through the balancing function of beneficial bacterial called flora, the colon also helps protect the body from infection and disease. The colon is a invaluable organ among many cooperative eliminative organs in the body that must be properly maintained to obtain long-term sustainable wholistic health.

To avoid discomfort and to consciously maintain colon health, many folks know the benefits and importance of eating a diet rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber and drinking adequate water throughout the day. However, there is another way that the colon can be maintained and aided in its elimination process: through the mechanical application of colon hydrotherapy.

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is water therapy. Colon hydrotherapy, therefore, is the therapeutic application of water in the colon. The primeval application throughout history of colon hydrotherapy has been the familiar enema. This common health practice found in the writings of several cultures throughout antiquity among ancient Egyptian, Sumerian, Chinese, Greek, and Roman people was practiced by Louis VIII and gained popularity in the 20th century through the published case studies of Dr. J.H. Kellogg, MD, in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 1917. Dr. Kellogg’s success in treating 40,000 gastrointestinal patients lead to the development of advanced colon cleansing equipment able to perform the procedure known today as colon irrigation or colon hydrotherapy (colonic, in short).

What’s the difference between and Enema and a Colonic?

A colonic is a more complete and extended form of colon irrigation that uses FDA registered equipment, disposable speculum and tubing, and filtered water. A typical self administered enema is a one-time infusion of approximately one quart of water into the rectum that is held by the patient for a period of time before evacuating directly into the toilet. In contrast, a colonic treatment involves repetitive infusions (filling and emptying accordingly) of filtered, warm water into the colon of the patient by a certified colon therapist while the gowned patient lies comfortably on a treatment table for approximately 30-45 minutes.

The one quart of water administered in an enema will irrigate only the sigmoid colon (a small portion of the lower colon). On the contrary, the typical comfortably administered colonic will appropriately infuse approximately 30 gallons of water through repeated infusions enabling the water to pleasantly travel up the descending colon, around the splenic flexure, across the transverse colon, around the hepatic flexure, down the ascending colon to finally irrigate even what is called the cecum of the large intestine. The immense benefit of such complete irrigation leaves no adequate comparable substitute to the colonic application.

The equipment used in an enema, and similar “open-system” irrigation methods, is solely a clean water inlet pipette that is inserted into the rectum to infuse water from a bag or clean water source by way of gravity. When sensing the need to evacuate, the patient clamps the clean water inlet pipette and moves to evacuate in the toilet.

Distinct from an enema, the colonic is a completely closed clean water inlet and waste outlet system administered fully by a colon hydrotherapist who after inserting the disposable speculum into the rectum safely controls the water temperature and pressure gauges throughout the filling and emptying cycles of the colon irrigation treatment. The colonic is called a “closed system” because the water and waste material removed from the patient are always enclosed in disposable tubing and are cleared through the machine’s observation instrumentation before being eliminated through a closed, sanitary drain system. A colonic is completely a pain-free and safe treatment for people in the generally healthy population. Contraindications are reserved for those with recent surgeries or others of specific severely ill populations. Most people report feelings of refreshment after a colonic, a pleasant experience, and have no objections to receiving future treatments.

Why would I ever want to do a colonic?

If you have never considered doing a colonic until now, let's consider some of the most basic advantages. Colon hydrotherapy is all about effectively eliminating toxins from your body so as to clear the proverbial road to digestive wellness and vibrant health. This concept of eliminating toxins from you body has commonly been called “detoxification”. This is not a new concept throughout ancient history and many forms of detoxification have been practiced such as fasting, sweating, modified diets, juicing, herbal usage, deep breathing, exercise, and even colon irrigation techniques.

Toxins are foreign, useless, and potentially harmful substances to the body. Under ideal conditions, the body’s detoxifying and eliminative organs do an excellent job in neutralizing and removing such substances as designed. However, toxins that get stuck or stored in the body will remain there and exert a strong imbalancing influence toward what is called ‘dis-ease’ until removed.

Detoxification has been practiced because toxins that are stored in the body can eventually overwhelm the liver, the primary detoxifying organ in our body. One function of the colon is to reabsorb water to properly form fecal matter intended to be evacuated. The longer fecal matter remains in the colon more water is absorbed often creating constipation. Over time, trapped toxic fecal matter continues to negatively influence the water that is reabsorbed causing it to be more toxic. That reabsorbed toxic water then must be detoxified by the liver to protect the body from poisoning. When the liver is overwhelmed by toxic overload, the next defense is to create a barrier between the foreign substance, or toxin, and the body’s healthy cells, tissues and organs. This barrier is called inflammation. Sustained inflammation unchecked over a period of time will result in chronic autoimmune disease.

Inflammation is the source of the expression of many dis-eases. Decreasing inflammation is the goal of most health practitioners. Colon hydrotherapy cleanses and balances the body by reducing stagnation of waste and, therefore, toxic waste absorption. Unlike chemical laxatives, which encourage dependency, colon hydrotherapy actually helps improve the muscle tone of the bowel to “re-educate’ it to function normally (which is to have a bowel movement after each meal consumed).

Questions and Concerns

Perhaps now is the time to honestly examine yourself and ask some provocative questions

Is my eliminative system under-active?

Have I always completely evacuated all the waste produced from every meal I have ever eaten?

What happened to that waste my body produced after eating but was not expelled because I was constipated for a period of time?

Am I being unrealistic in assuming my body can handle varying degrees of toxic overload without needing assistance to operate at highly efficient level throughout a long lifetime?

Do I really believe chronic illness always just suddenly appears without reason rather than being slowly influenced by an imbalanced internal environment overrun by toxins for an extended period of time?

What is stopping me from receiving the preventative benefits of colon hydrotherapy?

Colon Cleansing Makes Sense

We understand the common analogy, ‘one bad apple spoils the whole bunch’ through the powerful principle of influence that leads toward degradation. Certainly the rotten apple does not improve the health of the other apples nor do non-rotten apples improve the health of rotten ones! Then perhaps we can also understand the destructive influence trapped toxic and fermenting waste product will have on all the organ systems of our body when left unaddressed in an overworked organism over a period of time. A body with high level wellness must effectively remove waste or it will be downgraded by force. There is no such thing as status quo. The entropic river of health you float on has a natural perpetual current pulling you down stream toward illness, decline with age, and death. You must paddle upstream or simply accept inevitable degeneration!

You are not alone. Many, many people have never considered doing a colonic and have no desire to ever do so for the rest of their life. Everyone has their own personal reasons for their free choices. If you consider yourself an informed individual empowered to make wise, preventative, anti-aging health decisions for your body, then do not too quickly overlook this extremely beneficial treatment that promotes a better quality and quantity of life. Many people after obtaining new information believe they can remain unchanged by their new awareness. In a river that perpetually flows and in a life that has time constraints, the choice to make no decision is still making a decision. Decide today to pursue a greater understanding of your colon health so that you will make health sustaining practices such as regular colon hydrotherapy a way of life.
